How to prepare for your doctor's appointment: 6 simple steps
Appointment time is usually short, and many people leave having forgotten an important question or detail. Preparing takes only a few minutes and makes the visit clearer for you and for the doctor.
1. Write down how you feel
Note your symptoms in your own words: when they started, how often they occur, and what makes them better or worse. Written notes are more accurate than memory during the visit.
2. Prepare your medicine list
List everything you currently take, including vitamins, supplements and over-the-counter medicines. You can also bring the packs or photos of them.
3. Gather previous reports
If you have lab results, scans or reports from earlier visits about the same issue, bring them or keep photos on your phone.
4. Prepare your questions
Write the questions you want answered, starting with the most important, such as:
- What is the likely diagnosis?
- What is the next step: tests, treatment or follow-up?
- When should I come back?
5. Arrive a little early
Arriving early gives you time to register without cutting into your visit. Remember your Civil ID and insurance card if you have one.
6. Note what the doctor said
Before you leave, make sure you understood the instructions, and do not hesitate to ask for them to be repeated. Write down the next steps and the follow-up date.
